Perugia, the hilltop capital of Umbria, overlooks the vineyard-rich valley below and feels like a living postcard of medieval charm. Of my favorite Five Charming Cities in Umbria, Perugia
enjoys easy access by train from many well-known Tuscan and Umbrian cities—all within two hours—Perugia invites visitors to linger longer, explore more, and fall in love with its timeless beauty.
Here are a few reasons why I believe it deserves more of your time:

The City Itself
Having visited Perugia numerous times, one of my favorite activities is simply walking around. The city is filled with flower-lined cobblestone streets, narrow alleys, and historic piazzas where centuries-old palazzi (plural for palazzo) sit alongside arch-framed stairways. If you walk to the outer walls, the views will take your breath away, especially at sunrise and sunset.
The Food (of course)
Food lovers will be delighted by Perugia’s handmade chocolates, which are famous worldwide. If you can time your visit for October, don’t miss the Eurochocolate Festival—it's a real treat! You can sip cocoa-infused grappa with locals and marvel at sculptures carved from giant blocks of chocolate.
If you visit at another time, I recommend taking a chocolate tasting class, as I did in the photo above.
Easy Access to History
Located in the heart of Umbria, Perugia boasts a rich history that dates back to Etruscan times. Much like nearby Tuscany, it flourished during the Renaissance, and the beautifully preserved medieval and Renaissance architecture gives the entire city a magical feel.
There’s so much to explore, from the fascinating underground city (built right into the rock!) to the stunning interior of the Duomo and the many public buildings that have stood the test of time.
With its vibrant university atmosphere, rich arts and culture, and delightful charm, Perugia is the perfect spot for a quick getaway or an extended stay—you might find it hard to leave!
