Experience the Authentic Charm of Siena, Italy: A Siena Italy Travel Guide

Piazza del Campo-the town square of Siena with Palazzo Pubblico

Stay a While in Siena

To truly appreciate the complexity and beauty of Siena, I recommend you spend more than just a day in this enchanting city. Start with a walking tour to gain an understanding of the area and familiarize yourself with the surroundings.

Make sure to allocate time to explore the Gothic/Romanesque Duomo, which features stunning mosaics from the floor to the ceiling, as well as the impressive Piccolomini Library adorned with perfectly preserved frescoes.

Additionally, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Pubblico Palace, located in the Piazza di Campo, where guided tours are recommended. Both the Duomo and the Pubblico Palace offer access to terraces that provide breathtaking views of the city's iconic terracotta rooftops and the picturesque surrounding valley.

Another must-see attraction is Saint Catherine’s Basilica, which dates back to the 1200s and boasts remarkable historical and architectural significance.

How to get to Siena

When traveling to Siena, Italy, there are a few transportation options to consider. If you're coming from Florence, you can take a direct train, which takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. However, it's important to note that the train station is located at the bottom of a hill. If you choose not to hire a taxi, you can take the escalator system up to the city gates. A taxi from the train station or hotels outside the center to the Duomo typically costs about 12-15 euros.

Alternatively, you can opt for the bus from Florence, which takes around 1 hour and drops you off directly in the city center near the Duomo or Piazza di Campo. This option is usually more affordable than the train.
